Periodontal (Gum) Care
Periodontitis occurs when you suffer from severe gum disease. It begins when bacteria hiding under your gums start eating away at your jaw bone forming pockets which results in inflammation of gums, ligaments, and bone structure.
It is important that periodontitis is treated as soon as possible to prevent any irreversible damage.
There are many symptoms of gum disease and periodontitis. Some of these early and advanced stage warning signs include:

Continuous bleeding when brushing and flossing.

Foul odour to your breath that isn’t freshened by mouthwash.

Red, puffy inflamed gums that lack a healthy stippled appearance.

Large black triangles between your teeth which represents bone loss.

Deep pockets where food and bacteria get caught beneath your gums.
Stage 1:
During the early stages of periodontitis you may have:
- Tooth or gum sensitivity.
- Mild bleeding from gums when brushing or flossing.
Stage 2:
If stage 1 symptoms are ignored, your periodontitis may progress resulting in:
- Teeth becoming loose.
- Throbbing or tightness in your gums.
- Severe bleeding from gums when brushing.
- Bad breath.
Stage 3:
This stage is recognised as advanced periodontitis. It is important that you receive treatment as soon as possible to prevent loss of teeth. Symptoms include:
- Severe pain from teeth and gums.
- Teeth that are very loose.
- Blood or pus extruding from your gums.
While regular and correct brushing and flossing will help prevent periodontitis, it is important that you continue to book regular dental check up and hygiene appointments.
