Conditions Overview

Find out the different types of dental conditions we treat.

Crooked Teeth

Crooked and misaligned teeth include crowding, overlapping, missing/extra teeth, incorrect bite and misaligned jaw. They not only make you feel uncomfortable about your smile, it also makes brushing and flossing a lot more difficult.

Often food will get caught in the hard to reach places and over time if not cleaned thoroughly will begin to cause plaque build-up and gum disease

Causes

There are many reasons you may suffer from crooked/misaligned teeth, such as:

  • Small Jaw which results in crowded, overlapping and twisted teeth.
  • Lower and upper jaw are misaligned causing an overbite or under bite
  • Early loss of baby teeth or adult teeth
  • Thumb sucking, tongue thrusting as a child
Symptoms

Symptoms can range from pain, periodontal issues to occlusion issues and cosmetic concerns. At Odin House Dental Surgery we offer many solutions for crooked and misaligned teeth. You can book a FREE Invisalign or Cosmetic Smile Makeover appointment with us to discuss your options.

Gum Disease

Gum disease (gingivitis) is typically present due to a plaque build-up on your teeth causing inflammation of the gums.

Without proper brushing & flossing and regular dental scaling & cleaning this plaque calcifies, which irritate the gums further and cause long term, persistent inflammation.

Causes

The most common cause of gum disease is poor oral hygiene. Other risk factors of gum disease are: smoking, crooked or crowded teeth, breathing through your mouth, food and drinks high in sugar and some medications.

Gum disease is usually pain-free a bit like high cholesterol and blood pressure. However, if left untreated it can lead to Periodontitis (a severe form of gum disease), which results in bone loss and can lead to pain and eventually loss of teeth.

Symptoms

Gum disease is usually pain-free a bit like high cholesterol and blood pressure. While gum disease does vary in severity, early symptoms include bad breath, tender gums or bleeding gums. If left untreated it can lead to Periodontitis (a severe form of gum disease), which results in bone loss and can lead to pain and eventually loss of teeth.

Make a booking with our dental hygienist, they will assess the severity of your gum disease and perform a deep clean as necessary. After your appointment they will also teach you correct oral hygiene methods to prevent your gum disease from recurring.

Missing Teeth

Lost and missing teeth can occur as a result of tooth decay, gum disease or trauma. Besides causing discomfort, missing teeth can also cause your other teeth to shift resulting in more gaps and loose teeth.

Causes

If you have lost your tooth as a result of tooth decay, further examination is required to ensure your other teeth are not at risk. We will also need to check for gum disease. Depending on the results, we will discuss taking further action to reduce your risk of further decay.

If you have lost your tooth due to trauma we will need to ensure that there isn’t any root fragments left behind. It is important that while your tooth is missing the gum does not get infected.

Options

Odin Dental will discuss cosmetic and functional options with you to get your smile back to its original state.

Here at Odin House Dental Surgery we offer Dental Implants, Bridges or Partial Dentures. Call us to find out more.

Toothache

There are many possible reasons for toothaches. They are an indicator that something is not right. Depending on the reasons for your toothache you may only require a simple filling or in more extreme cases you may need a root canal.

Types of Pain

There are several types of tooth pain. These including:

  • Mild Sporadic Pain – If the pain you are experiencing is mild and sporadic the cause of your pain may be due to either tooth decay, sensitive roots from receded gums or a small crack in a tooth.
  • Moderate Pain – Again, this pain may be sporadic but slightly more intense than mild. You may feel the pain when you are eating hot or cold foods. Reasons for this pain may be abrasions on your teeth caused by brushing too hard with a hard or medium bristled toothbrush, more severe tooth decay, deeper cracks or even broken fillings.
  • Severe Pain – If you’re suffering from severe pain, it’s time to stop reading and book an appointment with us. If it is interrupting with your daily life and causes restless nights, give us a call today. Reasons your pain is so intense may include dying nerves, decay reaching your nerves, large cavities or chronic gum disease.

Tooth Decay (Caries)

Tooth Decay or dental caries as we call it occurs when dental plaque, sugar and acids dissolve your enamel and dentine.

Sometimes, you will feel pain in your teeth which may indicate tooth decay. It can often be a pain-free process until decay becomes severe. If detected early enough it can be resolved with a filling.

Prevention

Your best protection against dental caries is daily brushing, flossing, using fluoride toothpaste, healthy low sugar & acidic diet and maintaining regular dental visits.

Oral Hygiene

Dental cleans are required as plaque can be trapped in the grooves of your teeth, in between your teeth and in your roots which regular brushing and flossing cannot reach.

Tooth Discolouration

Tooth discolouration occurs from stains on the surface of your tooth or by changes inside the tooth. The colour change varies from yellow tints, brown spots or streaks.

Causes

External Stains – also referred to as extrinsic stains occur on the enamel of your tooth and are caused by foods, drinks and habits such as red wine, soft drinks, tea, coffee and smoking.

Internal stains – occur in the internal structure of your tooth. These stains can occur from too much fluoride, antibiotics or trauma.

Prevention

There is no need to stress about tooth discolouration, it will occur overtime as you age. Along with our teeth whitening services, there are a number of preventative measures you can take such as brushing your teeth after every meal, rinsing your mouth after drinking coffee or red wine, keeping up to date with your 6 monthly dental cleans and avoiding overuse of fluoride in children to prevent discolouration.
