Wisdom teeth, also known as the third molars, are the last teeth to come through the gums. With a large percentage of people, there is not enough space at the back of the jaw for the wisdom teeth to come through.
This causes the wisdom teeth to become wedged or “impacted”.
Most of the time these impacted wisdom teeth cause a number of complications such as inflammation/infection, uncomfortable crowding and sometimes damage to adjacent teeth.
We offer wisdom teeth removal under tablet or IV sedation.

Removal of wisdom teeth is a very common procedure and can be done in the chair depending on the positioning of the teeth. We can offer light sedation prior to your wisdom teeth surgery for a more relaxed, pleasant experience.

Wisdom teeth need to be extracted if they cause pain, overcrowding in your teeth, or become impacted. In some cases, the teeth can erupt without causing any of these issues and do not need to be removed. When having orthodontic treatment, we may remove your wisdom teeth to make more room for teeth movement.
On the day of the surgery, you’ll want to make sure that someone is available to drive you home, as you will likely be drowsy and unable to operate a car. You won’t be able to eat hard foods, drink or smoke for three to four days. If your wisdom teeth were impacted, recovery could take longer. Our dentists will let you how to take care of the extraction site and keep it clean during recovery.
If you do not have enough room in your mouth for your third molars to erupt, it is advisable to have them removed as soon as it is recognised. In some patients, this is as early as 11 or 12 whereas in others it may not be until 17 or 18 years of age. You will heal faster, with more predictable final healing and have fewer complications than an older patient.
You’ll probably want to have some type of sedation for the procedure, so discuss your options with our dentist ahead of time. Depending on the type of sedation, you may need to fast after midnight before the appointment. We can also advise you about medications and other steps that you can take to prepare.
Recovery from wisdom teeth removal usually takes 3 or 4 days. If your teeth were impacted, it may take up to a week to heal. Swelling around the mouth and cheeks stops after a couple of days and any remaining stiffness or soreness should be gone within a week.
